After graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College with a degree in political science, I worked for the GF Parish Group, an executive search firm in the asset management industry. I now work as a recruiter for Ameriprise Financial. In addition to Deviated Septet, I sing with the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers.

I am into snowboarding, sailing, yoga, foreign travel, sourcing food locally, biking for travel (not exercise), live performance & bonfires. Some of my favorite bands include: Bon Iver, MGMT, Ben Harper, The Killers, Fleet Foxes, Prince, and The Ting Tings. I like to use the autotune iPhone app to make funny recordings of my grandma singing.

After moving around quite a bit during childhood, my family landed in Minnesota. I attended high school in Silver Bay, a quaint little town on the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior. From there, I went to St. Olaf College and majored in economics. I was lucky enough to get to sing in a couple operas and record and tour extensively with the St. Olaf Choir. After graduating in 2000, I moved to Minneapolis and started singing professionally, first with the Dale Warland Singers and subsequently with Ensemble of the North, Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and for special Minnesota Public Radio recordings and the like. I’ve also done some voice-over work and am currently the bass section leader at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral. I founded Deviated Septet in 2007 to satisfy my love of small ensemble singing. Other loves include running, cooking, nature, piano, hiking, wine, friends, farmers markets, impersonations, laughing, Lake Superior, my cat, eating organic whole foods, my bed, pool at Bar 19, learning, teaching, talking to myself, facebook, and figuring out ways to lessen my carbon footprint and be the best global citizen I can be. Life is good!

I was born and raised in Green Bay, WI, but moved to the Twin Cities in 1995 when I was old enough to start appreciating all it had to offer. A year and a half into my undergrad, I realized that all of the courses I wanted to take were in the School of Music, and that I was most stimulated and happiest there. So, I gave in and studied vocal music education. After all, you don’t choose music, music chooses you. After teaching for a bit, I realized that I liked administration better, and found myself back at the U of MN School of Music, but this time, as staff. I had an amazing experience serving as Executive Director of The Alchemy Project, a non-profit that explored public health through the arts, and I currently serve as the U of MN School of Music Graduate Student Services Assistant and Community Engagement Coordinator and crawl towards my grad degree in arts and cultural leadership. It all works-- I make a living, get to study and lead in the arts sector, and of great importance, I get to sing.

Ensemble singing has always been a big part of my life, from re-staging all of Les Mis with my sister and our neighborhood friends in WI, playing violin throughout secondary school, singing in choir and whatever small ensemble I could get my hands on, to section leading for The Singers since its inaugural year, and presently, having a kick ass time in Deviated Septet. Art is story-telling and community, and I am grateful for it.

I was born in Iowa City but moved to Des Moines when I was 6. I learned to love ensemble music-making way back in third grade when I joined the Des Moines Childrens Chorus. After five years of performing and touring with DMCC, I began to study privately. At Urbandale High School, I sang in the concert and show choirs, performed lots of musical theater and sang in the All State choir for four years. I went to Drake University to study opera with Leanne Freeman-Miller and in 2002 I graduated with a degree in vocal performance. I moved up to the Twin Cities in 2003 to sing with the Dale Warland Singers, and I continue to sing professionally with the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and as section leader/soloist at Plymouth Congregational Church. Previously I have performed and recorded with the Dale Warland Singers, Garrison Keillor on A Prairie Home Companion, Ensemble of the North, and the MPR Carolers. When I am not singing with Deviated Septet, I can be found at my agency job, in graduate school at the University of Minnesota, or spending what little spare time I can find with my husband Ryan and our cat Mrs. Claws.

A few months after being born in St. Paul, I found my way via Catholic Charities to the small river city of Hastings, Minnesota. I spent my childhood here, taking piano lessons across the river in Prescott, playing the flute, and then the oboe, and singing occasionally for church services and school events as a small child and pre-teen. I didn’t join a choir until I entered high school and my world was opened up to the amazing things the human voice is capable of. I was so enthralled with this discovery I decided to venture nine hours away to Decatur, Illinois where I began a double major in Commercial Music and Music Education at Millikin University. While there, I sang in the University Choir, and the vocal jazz group One Voice. I also had the opportunity to solo with the Jazz Band my senior year and to direct a women’s vocal jazz group which was great fun. Finishing up my major in Music Education, I found my way back to Minnesota to teach middle school choir in White Bear Lake for two years. I found I needed a little more of a balance and after a one year stint in South St. Paul I landed in the River Falls school district in Wisconsin where I teach both middle and high school choir. In addition to my teaching duties, I direct a church choir in Hastings and lend my voice to the alto section of The Singers. Some (including myself at times) will say that my life is too full, but I find great fulfillment in all of my endeavors, as music, both directing and performing, is an integral part of my being.

I was born and raised in Nebraska. I moved to Lincoln in 3rd grade and graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School. After graduation, I moved to Minnesota to attend North Central Bible College (now called North Central University). After a couple years, I transferred to Northwestern College in St. Paul, where I graduated with a degree in Music Education. I kicked around a few years, directing church choirs and singing professionally around town. Then in 2001, I decided to use my bachelor’s degree and teach in the public schools. I’ve been doing so ever since.
